A stay at the Duo Hotel Lisbon, Curio Collection by Hilton, beautifully blends many experiences as a home base while exploring Portugal’s capital city. The property features two architectural styles among its guest rooms. The Dom Luis Building, accessible from the lobby, offers a modern feel with contemporary rooms. The refurbished historic Boavista building mixes “tradition and innovation”, with such touches as interesting artwork made from Portuguese tiles. MEET UP IN THE COURTYARD
Both sides of the property are connected by a large open courtyard filled with intimate groupings of seating set in a light dusting of sand floor. A tile wall of blue on one side fronts a water feature—offering an homage to the area that once was a beach before the land was extended to the river as part of city improvements. There are also tables for outdoor dining here for a quick drink or a meal from the excellent hotel restaurant, Novo Mundo.

DELICIOUS DINING
Novo Mundo serves traditional Portuguese cuisine with what the restaurant calls a “modern twist”. The chef will also customize your meal based on your dietary needs and for us, created an absolutely delicious dinner of grilled shrimp, free-range chicken, salmon, and a dessert called Pineapple Carpaccio served with coconut ice cream.

The intimate restaurant offers a lovely contemporary design. Novo Mundo is also the location for the daily breakfast buffet from 7 to 11 a.m. that is well worth the add-on. A selection of breads, fruits, cheeses, salads, yogurts, pastries, and juices are complimented by cooked-to-order hot options of eggs and omelets your way delivered to your table. You can also choose avocado toast, pancakes, and other options for an additional cost.

Within the hotel lobby, Quiosque can provide a quick coffee, drink, or light snack. But if you have a sweet tooth, do not miss For the Voyage pastelaria for coffee, pastries, and sweets, including a selection of Lisboeta chocolates.

Special offerings from the hotel include hands-on Portuguese tile making and specially prepared picnic baskets. Foodies will enjoy the 7 Paintings Dinner Show, which incorporates seven courses and interesting stories of artwork.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
When discovering a city, location is key and we loved that we could set off on foot to explore right from the front door of Duo Hotel Lisbon, Curio Collection by Hilton. However, be sure to pack great walking shoes for tackling the city’s well-known hills. Near the hotel is one of the city’s main food markets, the historic Mercado da Ribeira. Located within it is the Time Out Market, home to 26 restaurants, eight bars, and 12 shops. Grab a seat at the counter at Libertà Pasta Bar and choose your favorite fresh homemade pasta dish. Stroll along the nearby Tagus River promenade and stop at stalls for some shopping or depending on the time of day, listen to DJ music. Walk to Pink Street, or Rua Nova do Carvalho, which is literally painted pink and is pedestrian only for some fun photos. It’s also a hot spot at night with clubs and bars.

Lisbon is also home to great shopping in Chiado, including Armazéns do Chiado with 50 shops and 15 restaurants. Hop on one of Lisbon’s iconic trams—including the famous Number 28 that provides a nice overview traveling through such neighborhoods as Alfama, Chiado, and Bairro Alto. Terreiro do Paço, the city’s largest square, offers more water vistas as well as views of the 360-foot Cristo Rei statue inspired by Rio de Janeiro’s famous statue and the 25 de Abril bridge—which will remind you of another bridge in a hilly city—San Francisco’s Golden Gate.
