Tallow Steakhouse
Offering A Prime Steak Pre-Fixe You Can’t Resist
Nothing is quite more desirable to steak lovers than to get a bargain on their favorite cuts with an amazing large Italian style salad and unlimited fries. In these days of restaurants rising prices every couple of months, this is the only place that you will get steaks from the legendary Pat LaFrieda Meats at supermarket prices!
Located inside the newly opened Shaver Hall at 424 Fifth Avenue, Tallow Steakhouse is designed as a modern interpretation of the classic New York steakhouse. Rather than feeling overly formal or stuffy, it combines traditional steakhouse elements with a contemporary, approachable atmosphere.
Decor-wise, Tallow is rich and inviting. Dark wood finishes, caramel-colored leather banquettes, polished wood tables, brass accents, and warm lighting create a timeless, upscale look reminiscent of Manhattan’s iconic steakhouses. The open bar is a focal point, with bottles glowing behind it, while crisp white napkins, quality glassware, and classic steakhouse table settings reinforce the refined atmosphere. Despite being inside a bustling food hall, the restaurant feels like its own distinct dining room, separated enough to provide a more intimate experience.
TEMPTIN’ TENDERLOIN
The restaurant offers a prix fixe menu centered on USDA Prime steaks (you get a choice a seven-ounce Tenderloin, eight-ounce Hanger Steak or a 10-ounce Picanha), hand-cut tallow fries, classic salads, and an excellent cocktail program that focuses on Dirty Martinis, Old Fashioneds, and Manhattans.
GETTING TO THE MEAT OF THE MATTER
The menu is extra simple as getting to “the meat of the matter” is what Tallow is all about. They exclusively offer the $49.99 price fixe mentioned above and the only items that can be added are Bone Marrow, amazing homemade Sourdough Focaccia alone or with Homemade Burrata.
What did I order as the world’s biggest steak fan who simply can’t get enough medium rare beef? You just know that I had to go for the Tenderloin, and I loved that it came out perfectly medium rare and hot—I could barely eat half of it after having partaken of the generously portioned the Italian style salad topped with pepperoncini, garlic croutons, tomatoes, onions and an amazing slightly citrusy, slightly creamy dressing. My guest and I devoured the Sourdough Focaccia which was served nice and warm with a side of Homemade Burrata that tasted like it was just shipped in from Puglia, both drizzled with EVOO. The unlimited fries cooked in tallow were other worldly and both my guest and I were excited to get seconds despite the initial portion being huge! The kind staff through in extra fries for me when I had to take my leftover steak home in a doggy bag (that was so kind)!
BRING ON THE DESSERT CART
About six or seven desserts are available each night and are served at the end of the meal from a sophisticated silver and wood cart, with the giant Chocolate Chip Cookie with a giant melted chip in the center being the signature sweet. My guest and I devoured the creamy Key Lime Cheesecake with perfectly graham cracker crust. As for the Posset (a creamy panna cotta-like British dessert topped with raspberry sauce), we were tempted to actually lick the plate but were afraid that it would not be too appetizing for the other guests to see, LOL! We did not get the Chocolate Mousse but were able to try it at a special press preview a couple of weeks before. Let me just say right here that the chocolate used is rich—it is closer to dark chocolate than milk chocolate so it is very satisfying--and there’s a warm chewy brownie and three kinds of tiny chocolate balls serving as very special and unexpected toppings!
In case you’re curious, the driving force behind the Tallow Steakhouse is Randy DeWitt, founder and CEO of The Food Hall Company. DeWitt is a longtime restaurant entrepreneur who has spent decades developing hospitality and entertainment venues across the United States. Instead of filling Shaver Hall with only outside tenants, his team developed several original concepts—including Tallow Steakhouse, Tallow Butcher Shop, and the central Layaway cocktail bar—to give the food hall its own identity.
A LIVELY CROWD
In case you are concerned that Tallow is loud like other steakhouses, let me say that the mood is lively without being loud. During dinner, expect a buzz of conversation, upbeat background music, and a crowd that ranges from business professionals and after-work groups to couples on date nights and visitors exploring Midtown. It’s energetic enough to feel exciting but still quiet enough for conversation, making it well suited for both social dinners and business meals. Online reviews have specifically praised the ambiance, comfortable leather seating, and welcoming bar area.
ALSO CHECK OUT SHAVER FOOD HALL
One unique aspect of the experience is stepping out of the elegant dining room and directly into the larger Shaver Hall Food Hall. The historic former Lord & Taylor building has been transformed into a stylish culinary destination with soaring ceilings, restored architectural details, contemporary lighting, communal seating, and a central cocktail bar called Layaway. The contrast between Tallow’s intimate steakhouse feel and the vibrant energy of the surrounding hall gives the restaurant a distinctive personality that’s different from a standalone steakhouse. If you have adventuresome friends in from out of town, I can’t emphasize asking to be put at a communal table so that they will have some fun interactions with bonafide NYC foodies!
Overall, if you’re looking for a steakhouse with the atmosphere of old New York but without the stiffness of some traditional institutions, Tallow delivers a warm, polished setting. You’ll feel comfy in their leather booths, and will also love their moody lighting, excellent cocktails, and an energetic Midtown vibe that feels both contemporary and comfortably familiar.
