EARLY SUMMER ACTION FLICKS ARRIVE

HURRY UP TOMORROW
R
The Weeknd (the singer who is also known as Abel Tesfaye) takes the leading role in this thriller, his first feature film as an actor playing a fictional character. Of course, the title is taken from his most recent hit album and his character’s name is “The Weeknd,” so you might wonder where the lines blur. Go along for the ride and discover just how crazy things can get, with Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in supporting roles as this surreal action flick unfolds.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE
THE FINAL RECKONING

Not yet rated
Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt for the eighth cinematic outing of the Mission: Impossible team in this companion piece to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, picking up as that one left off. But don’t assume that this once-again action-packed movie is the “final” flick in the franchise that began in 1996, because Cruise and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie have not ruled out more. So, if crowds return to the multiplex to follow the now 29-year-old tale of the IMF and its fearless leader, they will return.

THUNDERBOLTS*
PG-13
The newest foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe throws together a gang of misfit superheroes who have devolved into a bunch of degenerates. As they team up on a dangerous mission, it’s hard to tell if there are any good guys in their mix. Actors happy to take home a big Marvel paycheck in this new MCU-franchise hopeful include Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Lewis Pullman, Olga Kurylenko, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. We’re just hoping they explain the asterisk in the title.

COMEDIES FOR BIG AND SMALL MOVIE LOVERS

LILO & STITCH
PG
Lilo & Stitch is Disney’s latest foray into turning their beloved animated features into live-action family flicks, which seemed like a pretty good idea until Snow White released in March and fell flat. This one’s got a lot more laughs, the beautiful Hawaiian scenery and Maia Kealoha, the adorable eight-year-old who plays Lilo, going for it. Plus, Hannah Waddingham and Zach Galifianakis add their general wackiness to the cast, so your kids may clamor to see this one again and again.

THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME
PG-13
When Wes Anderson releases a new movie, we’re usually the first in line, because his visual style alone makes his films incredibly fun to watch. Then add in the always weird and wacky cast of characters he creates and his odd way of telling unexpected stories and we are sucked in every time. His newest stars Benecio del Toro as a wealthy businessman who deals in munitions and Mia Threapleton as his daughter, a nun. Joining in the mayhem are Anderson regulars Jeffrey Wright, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Cranston, Hope Davis and Benedict Cumberbatch, along with Michael Cera and Riz Ahmed, proving again that when Wes Anderson asks, great actors come. running.
